If you take preorders with Amai PreOrder Manager + Notify, you may have spotted a change this week: the app’s Shopify App Store listing now says it is not currently available, and points merchants to contact Amai directly for support.
Amai has been one of the longest-running preorder apps on Shopify, so a lot of stores are affected. Here is what we know, what to check today, and how to keep your preorders running.
What happened
Since early October 2026, a checkout-hijack campaign has been hitting Shopify stores through third-party app code. Shoppers who pressed “Checkout” were sent to a fake payment page built to steal card details. We covered the first wave, which hit apps including HulkApps’ Product Options and Swym Wishlist Plus, in our earlier post.
On October 22, an agency founder reported that one of their merchants had its checkout hacked through Amai PreOrder Manager, an app that had not been named before, as shared on LinkedIn by ecommerce consultant Brent Peterson. The same post notes that Shopify has added a check that asks shoppers to confirm before a store sends them to an outside website, and that hundreds of apps have been delisted from the App Store during the incident.
A few things worth being clear about:
- Shopify has not publicly stated why the Amai listing is unavailable.
- Amai has not published a statement about the report that we could find.
- A delisted app is not automatically a compromised app. But if it touches your storefront and your checkout, it is worth checking today.
How to check if your store was affected
It takes two minutes:
- Open your store in a private / incognito window. Some malicious scripts only fire once per session, so a fresh window matters.
- Add a preorder product to the cart and press Checkout.
- Look at the address bar. You should land on your real Shopify checkout (your domain or
checkout.shopify.com), not an unfamiliar domain.
If anything looks off:
- Contact Shopify support right away.
- Disable the app until you have confirmation from the developer.
- Change your Shopify password and the password for any separate app dashboard account, and turn on two-factor authentication.
It is also worth watching the gap between checkouts started and orders completed in Shopify Analytics. A sudden drop in completed orders can be the first sign that shoppers are being sent somewhere else.
Before you switch: protect your open preorders
Preorders are different from a wishlist: you have customers who already paid, or paid a deposit, for products that have not shipped yet. Before you remove anything:
- Export your open preorders. Filter your Shopify orders by the preorder tag or note your app added, and download the list with ship dates and any balances still due.
- Note any partial payments. If you collected deposits, make a list of the remaining balances so nothing slips through when you change apps.
- Remove leftover code. After uninstalling, check Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds and Settings → Customer events for anything the old app left behind. Old scripts can keep running with no one maintaining them.
Keep taking preorders with Notify Me!
You do not have to pause your launches while you wait for news. Notify Me! handles preorders, and it is available on the Shopify App Store today with the Built for Shopify badge.
It also covers the “Notify” half of what Amai did:
- Preorders: Replace “Add to cart” with a preorder button on products that are sold out or not launched yet, with an optional release date.
- Partial payments and preorder discounts: Collect a deposit or the full price upfront, and reward early buyers with a discount.
- Back in Stock alerts: When a product sells out, shoppers sign up and get notified the moment it is back, by email, SMS, web push or WhatsApp.
- Wishlist: Shoppers save the products they love, so you can see demand building before you reorder.
Preorder confirmations go out by email and SMS, and the app connects to Klaviyo and 10+ other marketing tools.
More than 35,000 stores use Notify Me!, and it holds a 4.9★ rating from 3,900+ reviews on the Shopify App Store. There is a free plan to start, and our support team can help you rebuild your preorder setup.
The bottom line
This incident is a good reminder to know exactly which apps can touch your checkout. Test your checkout today, clean out apps and scripts you no longer use, and ask yourself which app would hurt most if it disappeared tomorrow.
If preorders are a big part of your business, give Notify Me! a try and keep selling while you sort out the rest.
